The PCS English department also welcomes Ms. Abi, who now teaches 8th- and 10th-grade English.
When asked how students can thrive in her class, she said, “Stick to the code: effort, engagement, and respect. Follow those three things and you’ll do great.” She also advises: “find what brings joy, what you’re passionate about, and how you connect with learning in a way that feels like something you’re doing for yourself.”
Ms. Abi would tell her middle school self: “Don’t get side bangs or chunky blonde highlights; you don’t have the complexion for it.” But she also added, “Don’t be so nervous that you miss out on opportunities.”
Surprisingly, Ms. Abi didn’t always plan to teach. She wanted to be a race car driver. But after teaching English in Spain at her professor’s suggestion, she realized how much she loved it. She later worked as a camp counselor, taking kids climbing and rafting, and discovered she enjoyed being around curious young people.
Outside of school, she describes herself as “an epicurean—I love everything.” She enjoys scuba diving, jiujitsu, reading classics, and exploring contemporary authors.
As for why she came to PCS, she said, “I really wanted to move to Santa Cruz… it’s one of the most magical places.” She applied thinking she wouldn’t get the job, but was drawn to PCS’s small classes, strong academics, and thoughtful students. “I love that PCS is a nerd school,” she said. “People are here to learn and push themselves.”
Her favorite classroom memories range from funny—her class holding a “funeral” for a dried-out marker named Joe—to moving: helping a student from Venezuela discover his voice through writing.
Ms. Abi brings energy, curiosity, and heart to PCS. Let’s all give her a warm welcome!
